At Roche, our Research and Development efforts are organized into Disease Biology Areas (DBAs) that focus on clusters of common biological mechanisms which are relevant to certain disease states. The purpose of the DBA structure is to bring together discovery biologists with clinical development, exploratory development and strategic marketing, all at one site, to increase innovation and create differentiated medicines. Roche has five DBAs, two of which are located at Palo Alto: Inflammation and Virology.

Roche Palo Alto’s small size, clear focus and integrated approach to drug discovery enable us to rapidly find and follow promising research leads. Our success in transforming the growing understanding of molecular mechanisms causing disease into effective therapies will help patients live longer, healthier lives.

Inflammation
The Inflammation Disease Biology Area is focused on delivering a sustained flow of valuable medicines for the treatment for a wide range of diseases including severe asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Our research scientists are working to unravel the molecular basis of disease and identify potential therapies that can improve the lives of patients with these debilitating conditions.

Virology
The impact of viruses is a growing medical concern and a major challenge for public health. The Virology Disease Biology Area is focused on challenging and life-threatening – hepatitis C virus (HCV), and other viruses.

The goal of the viral research group of scientists is to create the broadest range of tolerable and efficacious options for patients by identifying and targeting the genomic factors associated with viral disease, drug resistance and individual variation in therapeutic response.
